A 25 to 100L water tank with water heater. When turned on, the water will heat up and be distributed to multiple points like the shower, bathtub, wash basin, and washing machine.
Cold water flows through a solar water heater on top of the roof, heated up by the sun and stored in the tank.
Most residential properties in Malaysia and Malaysia use Instant Water Heaters.
Let's go through why choose an instant water heater in Malaysia. Comparing instant water heaters, storage water heaters, and solar water heaters.

Time to Heat Up | Instantly | 5 - 30 mins depending on the tank size | Depending on the weather. Has electric back-up to heat up the water |
Power | Electricity | Electricity | Solar + Electricity (Backup) |
Energy Saving | Consume electricity when in use. More energy efficiency compared to Storage Water Heater. | Always heated up as long as it was turned on. | Approximately 50% - 80% of water heating cost. |
Number of units required | 1 unit per bathroom | Multiple points. Shared by multiple bathrooms | Multiple points. Shared by multiple bathrooms |
Running out of Hot Water? | No. Unlimited hot water as long as you switch on. | Depleted quicker for smaller tanks or when used by multiple people at once. | Less likely, but happens if too much usage at once. |
Piping System | Normal Piping | Hot & Cold Piping System | Hot & Cold Piping System |
Pump Needed? | Built-in pump activated when water pressure drops below the threshold. | Centralized pump. | Centralized pump. |
Cost | From RM200/unit. Assuming 3 bathrooms, it costs RM600. | From RM450/unit. | From RM5000/unit |
What People Afraid of? | - Potential electrical leakage if the unit is compromised. - Weak water flow. | - Tank leakage due to corrosion or cracking. - Slow water heats up. | - High initial investment. - Corrosion due to exposure to the external environment. |
Editor's Comment: Instant Water Heater has more advantages in terms of performance and installation cost, hence it become a popular choice for most homeowners.
Minimum flow rate: 2 liter/minute, LPM
Best/Recommended water flow rate: 10 LPM
If the flow rate is below 5 LPM, a pump is required.
How do we measure flow rate?
Turn on the water to run at full. Then put a bucket with a volume mark and immediately start the timer. Remove the bucket from the water for exactly 1 minute. The amount of water collected is the flow rate in liters per minute.
Minimum water pressure: 3 psi
Best / Recommended water pressure: above 20psi
If you connect directly to the mains pipe, where the water pressure is higher, you do not need a pump.
If the water pressure is from the water tank installed in a 2 - 3 storeys high house, you will need a centralized domestic water pump.
How do we measure water pressure from an in-house water tank?
Calculate the distance between the tank and the water heater or hose.
Assuming a 2-storey house.
First Floor, 10ft: Pressure (psi) = 10ft / 2.3 = 3.5psi (very weak)
Ground Floor, 22ft: Pressure (psi) = 22ft / 2.3 = 9.7psi (weak)
A DC is more energy-saving and produces less noise compared to an AC pump.
The higher the power rating of the pump, the more water it draws, however the more electrical energy it consumes, and the more noise it makes.
It's up to you. You have either one or both of them.
Choose a design that suits your bathroom. The overall bathroom design looks aesthetic with suitable colors.
However, many are concerned about its safety.
All water heaters can bring safety hazards if installation is not done right or lack of maintenance.
Electrical leakage can lead to electrocution risk if the heating elements, wiring, or electrical components are not isolated from the water.
Overly hot water due to malfunction of the thermal sensor can cause scalding to the skin.
Here few water heater safety tips:
1. DO NOT attempt to install or replace a water heater yourself if you are not trained.
Although water heaters are electrical appliances that can be easily installed with an installation manual, but safety should always be the first. A simple mistake or improper installation can spell extremely dangerous disaster down the road.
2. Run the circuit breaker test by clicking the βTestβ button once a month.
Make sure the water heater is turned on and hit the button. The circuit breaker should be tripped immediately and cut off the power.
3. Check if the water heater wiring and casing are properly sealed.
Ideally, all wiring should be concealed but some might have the plug exposed outside. Make sure they are not exposed to easy splash.
Make sure all casing are closed properly.
4. Avoid pointing the shower or bidet at the casing or cable.
All water heaters shall come with IP25 protection from water spray, but that doesn't mean you should shoot a water jet at it (by accident, cleaning it, or for fun).
If you're renovating your bathroom, water heater installation works shall be done by the same renovation contractor.
You can ask for a quotation for a supply of water heaters you wish your contractor to install for you. You can decide if you buy them yourself if you can get the same product at a better price or if you prefer one from a different brand.
However, you are required to inform your contractor of the model of the water heater you plan to purchase for each bathroom.
The cost of the water heater supply and installation is as follows.

Choosing a tankless/instant water heater or storage water heater is down to everyone's preference.
Both water heaters are good in their own way. If you wish to have a bathtub, a Storage Water Heater is the best choise for you.
Strong Water Pressure
One of the benefits of having a storage water heater is the superb water pressure it offers. You will not experience a water change as long as the tank is not depleted. Unlike an instant water heater, you can feel the water pressure drop when some one in the house uses water.
Constant Water Temperature
As water is preheated in a tank, the temperature stays constant throughout the period.
Check if you have Hot & Cold Piping System
Before installation of storage water system, the hot and cold-water piping system must be ready.
Check the ceiling space in the house
For houses with attic or plaster ceilings, the storage water tank to be considered must fit the height in between and left with maneuver room for installation.
It is recommended to place the storage water heater near the manhole access for easy maintenance.
Distance between Tank and Shower point within 4.5m / 15 feet
Location longer than 4.5m may result in a longer waiting time before hot water arrives at the shower.
Choose the Right Capacity
It is recommended to choose the capacity based on actual daily water heater usage.
25-30L - Single Bathroom.
35 - 50L - Shared Bathroom. Small Bathtub
70L, 90L - Multiple Bathrooms. Large Bathtub
Most of the cost goes to the product, followed by the labor.
It is advisable to hire a qualified water heater installer to ensure safety and workmanship.
New wiring, power point, and switch are charged separately.
The biggest concern that every homeowner has is safety.
Today, an instant shower heater has full safety features that prevent electrocution accidents.
All instant water should have:
Circuit Breaker - Uses RCCB, RCD, or ELCB (Older model) that cuts the power instantly when it detects electrical leakage.
Splashproof casing - Prevent water from getting into the water heater unit.
Temperature Sensor - The Thermostat that detects and cuts off power if the water temperature rises above 70 degrees Celsius.
Non-conductive hose and pipe
Instant Water Heater Power Rating: 3.6kW
Number of Family Members: 5
Average shower time: 10 minutes / person / times
Total shower time (/month) = 10 minutes * 5 people * 2 shower/day * 30 Days = 3000 minutes / 50hours
Total energy consumed = 3.6kW * 50 hours = 180kWh
Malaysia Tariff Rates: RM0.218/kWh
Total Electrical Bill from Water Heater: RM0.218 * 180 = RM39.24 per month
A storage water heater (preferably 70L - 90L) is the best choice for you.
Solar water heaters are dependent on the weather. Hot water generation will be slower and the maximum temperature will be lower during a cloudy, hazy, or rainy day.
Electricity is used to make sure water is heated to a temperature if there isn't sufficient energy from the sun.
The period for return on investment may vary from 4 to 10 years depending on weather, usage, and other factors.
1 day on-site installation.
